How an English Ordinal total is made

Three steps. Nothing else is added or rounded.

1 · Use the table

A = 1 to Z = 26. Spaces, digits and punctuation add nothing. Names follow the same rule as words.

Calculate Gematria for a Name

Enter a name and choose a letter table. In English Ordinal, Emma = E (5) + M (13) + M (13) + A (1) = 32. Repeated letters count each time. Hebrew and Greek methods require their native letters; English names are not automatically transliterated.

Which letters does each method count?

Choose the script before comparing totals. These five labels describe input and mapping differences; Simple English and English Ordinal use the same values.

MethodInput and ruleChecked example
Simple English / English OrdinalLatin A–Z. A = 1 … Z = 26; identical to English Ordinal.J = 10
English Sumerian (Ordinal × 6)Latin A–Z. Each Ordinal letter value × 6; a modern calculator label.J = 60
Jewish (Latin)Latin A–Z. A separate Latin mapping; J = 600, not Hebrew script.J = 600
Hebrew Standard (Mispar Hechrachi)Hebrew letters. Units, tens, hundreds; standard final forms keep base values.מים = 90
Greek IsopsephyGreek letters. Isopsephy letter values; accents ignored, ς = σ.νερό = 225

Latin tables skip accented letters outside A–Z. Hebrew and Greek remove combining marks for calculation while preserving your original input. No method translates or transliterates text; for example, Latin nero is not Greek νερό.

Compare three words across letter tables

A worked example, not your current input. Read across each row to compare the same three spellings under one letter table.

  1. Enter listen in the calculator above.
  2. Select Pin to compare to keep that word in the comparison.
  3. Replace the input with silent and pin it, then repeat with hello. Compare the three pinned columns in the same row.

listen and silent rearrange the same letters. All three words total 25 in Full Reduction and 83 in Reverse Ordinal, but hello differs in English Ordinal. Equal totals in one table do not establish meaning or equivalence across different tables.

Frequently asked questions

Contact support: [email protected]
How is gematria calculated?

Choose a letter table, assign its value to each supported letter, and add the values. Open a result's letter breakdown to verify the sum.

Are all standard ciphers free?

Yes. The nine base ciphers plus Hebrew Mispar Gadol and Hebrew Ordinal, letter tables, sharing and recent ten local entries are free. Pro adds cloud history and favorites, custom ciphers, full concordance and batch CSV.

Why are Hebrew and Greek hidden for English text?

These ciphers require native letters and appear when those letters are entered. The calculator does not translate or transliterate text.

Does this calculator count numbers or punctuation?

No. Digit characters, spaces, and punctuation are ignored. Use Decoder to search for a numerical total.

How should I enter a first and last name?

Enter the exact spelling you want to compare, including any middle name. A–Z letters in all parts are added; spaces, apostrophes and hyphens add nothing. Accented Latin letters are skipped rather than changed to A–Z, so a differently spelled name can have a different total.

How do I look up a value from a specific cipher?

Select that cipher in the calculator and use Find matching words. The Decoder link carries both the total and cipher. If you enter the number manually in Decoder, choose the same cipher before comparing matches.
